3 Understanding International Student Rights in collab with VTPD - Thursday, February 12, GLC, Free Food

GPSS is teaming up with VTPD for an engaging info session and a Q&A for international students. A VTPD officer will walk through your basic rights, explain the roles of VTPD and the Blacksburg Police etc., and discuss what to do during a traffic stop or if ICE agents contact you. Join us to get informed, feel confident, and ask questions.

2 Travel Fund Program (TFP) opening soon

"The TFP application will be open January 19th - February 16th. TFP provides grants to partially offset expenses associated with graduate student conference travel, including transportation, registration fees, lodging, and meals for domestic and international travel.

Who can apply: Any Grad and Professional Student (Doesn't need to be a Senator)
Stipend: Position includes a $350 stipend per semester.

2 Update on International Travel for Grad Assistantship

You might have received an email from your department about international travel guidelines for graduate assistants. GPSS is following up regarding the the new guideline and exceptions that can be granting, here are some of the updates:
This change is not due to a any new federal policy but reflects long-standing university employment and tax rules. Graduate assistants are university employees, and assistantship work must generally take place in the U.S. unless prior approval for remote work abroad is granted. The exception may be granted to students who meet certain conditions for example, they are authorized to work in the country where they plan to travel (based on their immigration status there), they are tax residents of the United States, and the nature and duration of their work would not create a permanent establishment or payroll tax liabilities for the university in the foreign country.
We have asked them additional questions regarding the process for getting an exception, its deadline, paperwork needed, how to determine eligibility, who can help determine it, applicability to different types of students/travel, and retroactive payment.
We received reply: Tax Compliance office will get together with Grad School, Cranwell, and HR to assemble the answers to your questions ASAP.

2 Update on International Travel for Grad Assistantship

You might have received an email from your department about international travel guidelines for graduate assistants. GPSS is following up regarding the new guideline and exceptions that can be granting, here are some of the updates:
This change is not due to any new federal policy but reflects long-standing university employment and tax rules. Graduate assistants are university employees, and assistantship work must generally take place in the U.S. unless prior approval for remote work abroad is granted. The exception may be granted to students who meet certain conditions for example, they are authorized to work in the country where they plan to travel (based on their immigration status there), they are tax residents of the United States, and the nature and duration of their work would not create a permanent establishment or payroll tax liabilities for the university in the foreign country.
We have asked them additional questions regarding the process for getting an exception, its deadline, paperwork needed, how to determine eligibility, who can help determine it, applicability to different types of students/travel, and retroactive payment.
We received reply: Tax Compliance office will get together with Grad School, Cranwell, and HR to assemble the answers to your questions ASAP.

1 Policy to Combat Unprofessional Behaviors Towards Graduate and Professional (G/P) Students: Please fill out the 2-minute survey

Each year, around 400 graduate and professional student-related conflicts are brought to the Ombuds office and many more likely suffer in silence without seeking help. This is a first step towards a positive change.

2 The BOV wants your feedback on Athletics Engagement! Please fill out the 2-minute survey

As the Board of Visitors (BOV) considers changes to the funding model for intercollegiate athletics, Katie, the G/P Student Rep to the BOV, would like to collect data on graduate student engagement with athletics.

She is seeking input to share at the BOV meeting on September 30.

Most of us pay $732 in athletic fees (part of the comprehensive fees), so please share your opinions, regardless of how much you care about athletics at VT!

Please let the BOV know if the $732 athletic fee is affordable or a financial burden!
